OUR STORY
Hi, I'm Mei — the heart behind KILAU 🤍 In 2022, when I took the chance to make Bali my temporary home, I thought finding the perfect bikini bottoms for my new endless summer would be easy. But surprisingly, I kept running into the same frustration — bikini bottoms that either covered too much or didn’t flatter the way I hoped. All I was looking for was something that matched the classic shape of simple thongs, so my tan line would also look good in underwear. But nothing seemed to strike that balance between form and function.
Fast forward two years later, KILAU was born — out of a desire to design bikini bottoms that “just make sense”: minimal, yet providing elegant coverage for a secure and flattering fit. And fueled by a love for Indonesia, it was a no-brainer to produce the swimwear right here, working with talented artisans and giving back to the local community along the way.
The brand name KILAU is inspired by the Indonesian phrase “kilau matahari,” which translates to “sun glitter.” This enchanting term describes the sparkling shimmer that is created when sunlight reflects off moving bodies of water — like ocean waves. And just as the human body is largely made of water, the name KILAU embodies the idea that our pieces transform you into the perfect canvas for the sun, allowing you to shimmer and shine under its warm embrace while leaving you with the perfect, cheeky tan lines.
SUSTAINABILITY
At KILAU, we weave sustainability into everything we do because we are always looking for ways to do better.
Each one of our pieces is ethically handcrafted by local artisans in Bali, and we are committed to producing in small batches to ensure quality while avoiding overproduction. Our designs are crafted from premium Italian fabrics, merging luxury with a commitment to sustainability. We incorporate eco-sustainable fabric made from 78% regenerated ECONYL® Nylon yarn, a material derived from recycled ocean waste and other discarded materials. By choosing ECONYL® yarn, we help turn ocean waste into wearable treasure, transforming harmful trash into sustainable swimwear that feels as good as it looks.
As a growing small business, we are always eager to learn and improve, so don’t hesitate to reach out with any feedback, questions, or ideas.
"Terima kasih" means "thank you" in Indonesian. Thank you so much for your support, and we cannot wait to share more of our journey with you!
